First settled in 1854 by Mormon farmers (who abandoned it in 1857), Las Vegas' Spanish name means "The Fertile Valleys" because of the artesian springs found in its low areas. The area was a water stop for wagon trains in the late 1800's and later for railroads between Los Angeles and Albuqueque. The city of Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and officially incoporated in 1911. Gambling was legalized in 1931; however, the city began it's climb to fame in 1941 when gangsters Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Meyer Lansky begain financing early development. Las Vegas celebrated its centennial in 2005.
On the Vegas strip colorful lights, fantasty-like hotel and casino structures, historic entertainment venues and music swarm the senses. The Las Vegas Strip (or just "The Strip," reportedly named by police officer Guy McAfee, after his hometown's Sunset Strip, in Los Angeles) is a four-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South that has been designated an All-American Road. Many of the largest hotel, casino and resort properties in the world are located on The Las Vegas Strip (although only a small portion is within the city limits of Las Vegas). The Las Vegas Strip is also home to McCarren Airport, the famous "Welcome to Las Vegas" lighted sign, M&M World, Adventure Dome and the Fashion Show Mall as well as smaller casinos, motels. Starting in the mid 1990s, The Las Vegas Strip became a popular New Year's Eve celebration destination.
During that era, the Fremont Street Experience (FSE) was built to help rejuvenate the downtown. The multi-level Neonopolis, complete with food court and theaters, expanded the growing retail and services available in downtown Las Vegas.
A concerted effort has been made by city fathers to diversify the Las Vegas economy from tourism by attracting light manufacturing, banking, and other commercial interests. The lack of any state, individual or corporate income tax, and very simple incorporation requirements, have fostered the success of this effort.
